Sad to say but this customer will use this project longer than anything else that I have done. These are two 69" long by 1 1/2" casket handles made from Honduras mahogany. Not your typical mahogany. A local business brings in wrecked air planes from around the world and the owner has them crated with nice local woods. These casket handles were from a crate made from 24' long mahogany with widths up to 15' and 2" thick. It was put together with screws so it could be easily dissembled. All the Custom inspector saw was a 24' crate made from green rough cut lumber. Notice the center on the head stock. Filled end of nut with weld material, ground flat and drilled a 3/16" hole in center for 3/16" cold rolled steel. This will hold the spindle but if you get a catch the stock will slip and reduce damage to the stock and you. With this project I learned the difference between a casket and a coffin. Coffins were used in the US prior to the Civil War. They are the tapered box but were too labor intensive and couldn't be disabled for shipment. Two major considerations for the mass causalities of the Civil War.
